In order to become a leader in the office seating game, Knoll had to expand it seating line to compete with the then newly released Aeron Chair by Herman Miller. Internally, Knoll identified this area of high-end, high image, mid priced seating as the largest gap in its product offering. Knoll used the design solution of the Life Chair to strategically reposition them in the Seating market.
The project concludes that, on the basis of an on-site design audit of manufacturing processes and interviews, the Life Chair, when viewed in the context of Knoll's history, represents both an adherence to and a departure from the design practices for which Knoll is renowned.
